Herndon Honors Volunteers

Town holds the 28th Annual Mayor’s Volunteer Appreciation Night.

On April 15, 425 volunteers were honored for their service to the Town of Herndon from 38 different service organization and groups. Each of the honorees contributed 100 hours or more of volunteer service in the community last year. The 28th Annual Mayor’s Volunteer Appreciation Night was held at the Herndon Community Center.

Burke Residents Recognized

Volunteer Fairfax, along with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, will honor 117 local volunteers during the 20th Anniversary Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards sponsored by UnitedHealthcare. The Awards will be held Friday, April 27, at the Waterford at Springfield in Springfield. With more than 500 guests expected to be in attendance, the Awards is one of the largest community-wide recognition events for volunteers.

‘Oh My Son’ in McLean

Fairfax County Local Childcare Coordinators (LCCs) Dariece Rau, Kimberly Nelson, Christine Bodziak, Shawna Levins, Cinzia Putzeys and Debora Smith, along with area au pairs and their host families, enjoyed cool refreshing yogurt and other treats at Yolly Molly Café in Fairfax to support Cultural Care’s Kids First Foundation Sunday, Aug. 4. The families and au pairs came from Fairfax, Clifton, Centreville, Fairfax Station and Springfield, all with a mind to support child advocacy groups and other non-profits benefiting children in need worldwide. Currently, Kids First supports: Share Our Strength, one of America’s leading not-for-profit organizations whose mission is to end childhood hunger; Jeevitha Anathashrama, an orphanage in India; and Dom Dietzcka, an orphanage in Poland.

Allison Hunter Wins $2,500 Robinson Scholarship

The Lunsford/Behrend Scholarship. The Lunsford/Behrend Scholarship Fund, Inc., which has awarded a scholarship annually for the past seven years, was started by Robinson band alumni in honor of Robinson band directors James G. Lunsford and Jack Behrend, who taught and inspired hundreds of students during their tenure at the school during the 1970s. Hunter, who played first chair euphonium at Robinson, was selected from a pool of applicants who were evaluated earlier this year.

McLean Theatre Company Wins Nine Awards

The McLean High School Theatre Company (MTC) earned nine awards and recognitions at the Virginia Theatre Association’s (VTA) 2013 Conference awards ceremony Oct. 27, in Reston. MTC’s production of Jason Robert Brown’s "The Last Five Years," performed as a special 45-minute format, garnered five awards led by a special Judges Award for Best Musical Presentation and overall Honorable Mention for the production.
