Forest Edge in World Finals

Fifth graders compete at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.

A team of fifth grade students from Forest Edge Elementary School won first place in the state Odyssey of the Mind competition on Saturday, April 13, and these students will compete in Odyssey of the Mind World finals to be held next month (May 22-25) at Michigan State University, Lansing.

Forestville Elementary School Honors WWII Veterans

Last May a flame was lit for a very special undertaking when the students at Forestville Elementary attended a showing of "Honor Flight," a documentary based on the lives of four WWII Wisconsin veterans and their trip to see the memorial built in their honor.

As I look at the staged demonstrations that were organized before the now cancelled debate in Great Falls was clear that first, they were closely coordinated by Kathleen Murphy’s team; (one of the key organizers held Ms. Murphy’s kickoff), and second, that they were organized because Murphy does not want to debate all of the issues we have before our communities—she just wants to discuss her divisive social issues she’s based her whole campaign upon.

Patricia Rae (Pat) Cochenour, 71, of Reston Dies

Patricia Rae (Pat) Cochenour, 71, died on Dec. 29, 2013, at her home in Reston, after a long battle with cancer. Pat was born in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 5, 1942, to Ada May (Thorowgood) Cox and the late Thomas E. Cox, Jr. She married James R. Cochenour on Aug. 20, 1980.

As annual tax returns are being calculated and submitted in a last-minute furor across the country, Fairfax County Police have received an alarming report of 75 to 100 cases of tax identification fraud in recent weeks. Detectives are warning residents of the scam and urge them to take precautions to prevent being victimized.

Footsteps of Reston is Leaving South Lakes Center

The oldest existing running specialty store in Northern Virginia is leaving South Lakes Shopping Center in Reston to look for a new home. Footsteps owner Paul Zink started the business in 1987, opening his first store in Springfield on April 15, 1988, as a Fleet Feet franchise. In 1995 he started independently owned Footsteps of Reston at South Lakes Center and along with Safeway and CVS, Footsteps has been the longest existing business in the center.

Elizabeth Weil Oberdorfer, 96, of McLean, Dies

Elizabeth Weil Oberdorfer died peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, surrounded by two generations of her family. She lived 96 vibrant years. Elizabeth was born in Montgomery, Ala. in 1918. She graduated from Smith College in 1939 and worked and lived in New York City for a short time following her graduation.

To the Editor: I love this community. There are so many ways to serve a community as diverse and as vibrant as ours. I recently competed in a special election to succeed Congresswoman Comstock. While I came up short in the vote count, largely due to the unfortunate weather on Election Day, I am as inspired to serve as I was on that day. My passion to serve others only strengthens with each pursuit.

Reston Phase II Working Draft to Be Presented

The working draft for phase two of Reston’s master plan will be presented on Jan. 29. The second phase focuses on improving residential neighborhoods and village centers.

Knueven Voices ‘Concern of Great Importance’

The Planning Commission’s Public Hearing for the Reston Comprehensive Amendment has been set for April 22, 2015. Ken Knueven, president of the Reston Association, voiced a recent concern. “A concern of great importance has recently arisen,” Knueven wrote to the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning on Feb. 11.
