Inspiring Excellence in History and Government
Charity’s scholarship awards go to three youths.
With a speech about the importance of history and knowledge of government, U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10) presented the first annual National Heritage Scholarship at Oakton High School in May to kick-off the school’s annual award night The Scholarship awards $5,000 each to seniors at three Northern Virginia schools.
Brief: Spring Into Summer Fashion Show to Benefit Artemis House
The OLGC Women’s Club hosted a Spring into Summer Fashion Show in DeSales Hall, located on the parish campus of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Vienna Thursday, May 2. The clothing sponsor for the event was Chico’s of Reston Town Center. Chico’s provided the evening’s colorful spring and summer fashions which featured a dazzling line up of Women’s Club models wearing a number of different casual and formal looks for daytime and evening events.

Reston Native, FCPS Alumni Collaborate in Critical Point Theatre
Matthew Schott, a Reston native, is one of several recent Virginia Tech graduates and Fairfax County Public Schools alumni collaborating together in the form of Critical Point Theatre. Schott, one of the ensemble’s founding members, will star in the group’s first performance, "The Pavilion," which will run in a mid-Atlantic tour in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and several other Virginia locations.

Obituary: William John Hafer, 91, Dies
William John (Bill) Hafer of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Springfield, died on Tuesday, Oct. 22 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Hafer was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Hafer and Ann Schneider Hafer. He is survived by his loving wife, Marion Imfeld Hafer, of 68 years.
NOVEC Warns Of Energy Vampires
Electricity courses through wires in homes, schools, and businesses just as blood courses through living creatures’ veins. While fictitious vampires materialize on Halloween and in “Twilight” movies, energy vampires are real. They can suck enough electricity to account for about 10 percent of a consumer’s electric bill. The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative says consumers don’t need garlic or wooden stakes to stop energy vampires — they need power strips.

Mae Balboni of Reston Dies
Mae Balboni died Jan. 8 in her home. Mae was a resident of Reston for 13 years. She is survived by her daughters Mary Balboni and husband Chuck Norris of Reston; Anita Balboni and partner Steve Cooke of Schwenksville, Pa.; Lynda DiPasquale and husband Philip of Collegeville, Pa.; Catherine Balboni of Hatfield, Pa.; and her sons Joseph M. Balboni and wife Tammy of Eagleville, Pa. and Anthony V. Balboni of Cinnaminson, N. J.; her sisters Jane Ricci of South Weymouth, Mass.; Dorothy Wilson and husband Jimmy of Allison Park, Pa.; her brother George Goolsby and partner Rosalee Wiswall of Peobody, Mass; her sister-in-law Beatrice Birt of McKinney, Texas; her brother-in-law Al Rusas of Long Beach, Calif. Local Virginia memorial service is Friday Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. at Adams Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon. Her final resting place will be in Norristown, Pa. on Saturday Jan. 25, at St Patrick Cemetery where she will be buried with her husband Joseph J. Balboni.
