Representatives from the London Brass Rubbings Center visited Virginia Run Elementary School in April to present the history, people, and lifestyles of the Middle Ages.
Paying Respect to Fallen Soldiers
Around 25 scouts from Troop 976 Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Vienna and their families visited the Arlington National Cemetery on May 25 to pay their respects to the soldiers who have given their lives over the years for the United States’ liberty and security.

Recording artist and blues preservationist Curtis Blues sang and played at George Washington Middle School on March 2 to more than 300 students and teachers. His educational performance on the Mississippi Delta Blues wove together music, history and an inspirational message about creativity and character. Blues’ visit was sponsored by the Hammerheads, an afterschool club whose members had recently finished building their own cigar box guitars. Tech Ed teacher Kyle Godfrey sponsors the club in partnership with the Alexandria Seaport Foundation.
Potomac Snapshot: Adding New Location
Kicks Karate is opening its 13th location at 9812 Falls Road in the Potomac Promenade shopping center. Kicks Karate has been serving both Montgomery and Frederick counties for more than 20 years and taught more than 50,000 residents the benefits of martial arts. Alexandria Snapshot: Higher Power
Power outage along Duke Street on Tuesday, April 19 interrupted Shiloh Baptist Church’s service, so Pastor Taft Quincey Heatley organized his congregation and the visiting worshippers from Arlington’s Macedonia Baptist Church to take the service into the adjacent parking lot. “We came to worship, so that’s what we’re going to do,” said Heatley. “The church is not the building, it’s the people.”
Mount Vernon: Good Shepherd Church Turns 50
Bishop Paul S. Loverde visited Good Shepherd Catholic Church to take part in a Jubilee Mass in celebration of its 50th anniversary on May 30.
Underscoring Importance of Early Education
U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner visited The Child and Family Network Centers’ West End facility on March 7 to discuss President Obama’s 2015 budget proposal to invest in high quality early education for all children. Duncan, Sebelius, Moran and Warner received a tour of CFNC’s site and met with the children in their classrooms.
