For the first time in more than 10 years, a student representing the Arlington Club of Optimist International has won the organization’s district essay contest. Alina Kramer, a senior from Yorktown High School, recently won the Capital/Virginia District Optimist Essay Contest based on a theme of "How My Positive Outlook Benefits My Community."
Kramer will receive a $2,500 scholarship for the honor, according to Brig Pari, president of the Arlington Optimist Club. In addition, the essay will be sent to the international level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist districts. One international winner will be chosen and will receive an engraved plaque and recognition in The Optimist magazine.
"Kramer did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme. She expressed herself well through the essay and we are thrilled that her words are representing our district in international competition," Essay Contest Chair Erica Gum Burson said.
The Capital/Virginia District covers a region that includes Washington, D.C., as well as most of Virginia and three West Virginia counties.
