Alexandria and the War of 1812: A Town Occupied. Visit Carlyle House Historic Park on Saturday, Aug. 18 to learn about the burning of Washington and surrender of Alexandria in August of 1814 and the difficulties encountered by Americans during what has been termed “America’s Second War for Independence.” Lectures will take place in Virginia’s oldest bank building, the former home of the Bank of Alexandria, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and tours of the museum will take place from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 5-12.
