Blue Ribbon Partnership, Nadar por Vida, Swimming for Life Nadar Por Vida founder Arthur Lopez and nominator John Berlin of the Fairfax County Park Authority Arthur Lopez recognized minorities are under-represented in the sport of swimming and over-represented among drowning deaths. The drowning death rate is three times the national average in ethnic communities. Working on shoestring, Arthur Lopez recruited volunteers swim instructors and coaches from Holmes Middle School, the police and area swim teams. With corporate contributions from Cox and Speedo, and community contributions from Curl Burke Swim Club, Culmore Community Partners and school groups, Nadar Por Vida has paid for pool space and life guards through the Park Authority, modeling a financially self-sustaining partnership addressing a critical community need in Fairfax County.
