Little Run Elementary School on Olley Lane in Fairfax will host this year's spring carnival, "Medieval Festival" and Silent Auction on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The festival will feature Renaissance-themed games, activities, entertainment, food, concessions, prizes and fun as well as a silent auction — all benefiting Little Run Elementary. Four W. T. Woodson High School seniors have advanced to finalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. They are John Adams, Daniel Cassiday, Rachel Gross and Kristin Saenger. These students originally advanced to Semi-Finalist status by scoring within the top four-tenths of 1 percent of Virginia seniors on the October 2001 PSAT. They have now qualified for Finalist status. Finalist selection is based on SAT results, grades, recommendations and an essay. They now compete for National Merit Scholarships.
The Robert E. Lee High School Library is accepting donations of used books for its annual book sale through April 7. Fiction and nonfiction books including children's books, cookbooks, college textbooks and many others are welcome. All proceeds will help the library buy new books and materials for student use. Long & Foster Real Estate is offering a $125,000 Scholarship Program for well-rounded graduating high school seniors entering an accredited four-year college or university. All applications must be received by the deadline date of March 3, 2003, in order for the selection committee, comprised of local members of academia, to select the final scholarship winners by Spring 2003.
The Long & Foster Scholarship Program will award $1,000 to each of 125 worthy recipients throughout the region for the 2003-2004 academic year. The monetary scholarship award will be made payable directly to the college or university in the student's name. Once the winners have been selected the scholarships will be awarded beginning May 1, 2003. Applications for the Long & Foster Scholarship Program can be obtained from any of Long & Foster's 200 residential sales offices located throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, from high school guidance counselors, via Long & Foster's Web Site at www.longandfoster.com/scholarship or by calling 1-703-359-1750 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

The children and families of the Boyd School in Fairfax helped the children of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) celebrate the holidays. Boyd School children gave toys and food to help these neglected children share in the joy of the season.
The City of Fairfax Band is offering a $2,000 scholarship to the winner of its 2003 Young Artists Competition. All Northern Virginia high school juniors and seniors are eligible. The recipient also will make a special guest appearance with the City of Fairfax Band featuring guest conductor David Holsinger on Saturday, March 22, 2003. The School Board of Fairfax City has awarded the $305,000 contract to replace the indoor telescopic bleachers at Fairfax High School to Modern Door & Equipment Sales, Inc. This contractor has performed satisfactorily on previous contracts with the School Board.
