On Friday, March 7 about a dozen South Lakes students and teachers participated in an after-school open forum on the pending war with Iraq. Participants voiced their concerns, expressed their points of view, and debated both sides of the issue. The discussion lasted for about an hour and a half, and the group hopes to expand in size and meet on a weekly basis.
Seniors Dana Lattibeaudiere and Mike Walker participated in the NASA sponsored FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond Thursday-Saturday, March 6 -8. Consisting of about 20 students from area high schools, their team built a robot with four-wheel drive and box-stacking abilities. The team competed against 60 other teams and reached the quarterfinals of the competition.
It’s Academic seniors Jeff Gehring, Emily Howard, Derek O’Neill and Ben Schenker, and junior Julian Bui reached the playoffs in a day-long tournament on Saturday at Benjamin Banneker High School in Washington, D.C. South Lakes was one of about 60 schools competing in the tournament.
On Thursday, March 13, South Lakes will host the second annual Pyramid Choral Concert at 7 p.m. in the gym. The concert will feature the choirs of Reston elementary schools, Langston Hughes Middle School, and South Lakes. Admission is free.
