<b>Tipoff Tournament</b>
St. Stephen’s/St.Agnes hosted its 14th annual girl’s basketball tipoff tournament this past weekend. This year’s tournament included Bishop Ireton, St. Catherine’s School of Richmond, and Liberty Christian Academy.
In first-round action on Friday, SSSAS defeated St. Catherine’s, 45-29, behind the strong performance of senior Danielle Williams. Bishop Ireton lost to Liberty Christian, 48-36.
In the finals Saturday, SSSAS dropped a hard fought matchup to Liberty Christian, 48-36. Ireton barely lost to St. Catherine’s in the consolation round, 50-47.
Williams and junior Brianna Richardson of the Saints were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts, and were joined by Ireton’s Alana Thurmond. Liberty Christian’s Jelenna Antic was named MVP.
<b>Commonwealth Basketball</b>
<bt>Junior Evan Hortum scored nine points and had a number of assists in the Commonwealth Academy Cougars' 39-24 victory over The British School last Saturday. Freshman Maurice Meadows and junior Devan Gosain led the Cougars in scoring with 10 points apiece, despite The British School's aggressive zone defense. Junior Marcus Cox chipped in with six points, while sophomore Lawrence Hayes added in four. The win brings Commonwealth Academy’s record to 2-1. It will face Nora School on Thursday, Dec. 11.
<b>Alexandria Sportsman’s Club</b>
The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday night, Dec. 16 at the Old Dominion Boat Club. This month’s theme is college night and the guest speakers will be coaches of the George Mason football team.
A cocktail hour will start at 7 p.m. and the meeting will get under way around 7:30. All Sportsman Club meetings are free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
