Family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of Margaret Johnson, Alexandria’s newest centenarian.

Born in 1926, Johnson witnessed a century of historic change, from advances in technology and transportation to major social and cultural transformations.

Her grandson, Keegan Nelson, presented Johnson with an enlarged copy of the Washington Post dated June 30, 1926 – the day of her birth. The cost of the newspaper was $.02.

A longtime parishioner at St. Paul’s Church in Old Town, Johnson was also presented with a proclamation from the church designating June 30th as Margaret Johnson Day.
