To the Editor: A mega issue is playing out under the guise of a mini issue in northern Mount Vernon district.
When a Child Goes Missing
Annually in Virginia over 1,000 children are reported as missing.
What started as a missing child report on April 27 has since been resolved by the Mount Vernon police. On Friday, May 4, the police determined that the 12-year-old girl is in the custody of a family member. The investigation is ongoing but no charges have been placed at this time.
Help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ This Saturday
Postal carriers to collect donated food.
Among the letter carriers across the nation collecting food donations this Saturday, May 12, for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Mount Vernon’s postal carrier David Yip who delivers mail along Fort Hunt Road.

Park Improvements at Mount Eagle Park
Residents and local officials will gather on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the completion of improvements at Mount Eagle Park. The 12-acre park recently received a new playground, pavilion and sand volleyball court. A brief ceremony to be held at the pavilion will mark the occasion. Mount Eagle Park is located at 5919 North Kings Highway, Alexandria.
Driver Arrested In Hit and Run
Detectives have seized the suspect vehicle believed to be involved in what has been determined to be a fatal case of road rage. The driver of that vehicle is a 32-year-old resident on John Paul Drive in Alexandria, who has been arrested and charged with felony hit and run. The suspect vehicle is a black, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer and was located in southwest Washington, D.C.

Worker Dies on the Job A Herndon man working on a job in Chantilly died Sunday after an accident involving heavy equipment. Fairfax County police identified him as Gerardo Santiago Paulette Ruiz, 47. The tragedy occurred May 6, shortly before 3 p.m., at a business in the 4100 block of Lafayette Center Drive. Police say Ruiz was operating a forklift in the warehouse area and “apparently attempted to pass through a doorway when the forklift struck an overhead beam.” The beam then dislodged and fell on him. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local Man Pleads Guilty to Murder
He killed his father in Centreville.
Gbassay “Omar” Koroma was slated to stand trial for murder, May 7, in Fairfax County Circuit Court. Instead, he pleaded guilty in March and will be sentenced next month.

The crowd impatiently waited for the orange cover to be removed, then cheered as they grasped the full impact of the fire truck playhouse. The imaginative 10-foot high fire truck immediately captivated every child and adult at the presentation at the Anthony Wilder Design/Build (AWDB) offices in Cabin John.
‘Bullis Gives Back’ 5K/2.5K Fun-Run Will Benefit Charities
Course adjusts to school’s new acreage.
The “Bulllis Gives Back” 4th annual 5K/2.5K Fun Run will have a new look this year. The course will incorporate Bullis’ recently purchased acreage — and the pre-race will include a greater focus on health and exercise. Last year, more than 400 students, faculty and community members ran the distance — and the organizers are expecting more than 500 to take off when the starting gun sounds this year.
