Nine individuals chosen to receive scholarships.

From a pool of many qualified applicants, Fairfax Library Foundation has selected nine individuals to aid financially in their educational pursuits. Fairfax Library Foundation’s Undergraduate Scholarship winners are Matthew Albert Beer, Thien Mai, Katherine C. Pietras, Ingrid Thais Quiroz, Claudia Rojas and Laura Ung, receiving awards of $1,000 each. These awardees are in the midst of pursuing or will begin pursuing undergraduate degrees as of fall, 2013.

Robinson Drama Camp For Students, All Ages

A summer of fun and adventure is in store for those attending this summer’s Robinson Drama Camp. For the rising kindergartners through eighth graders: Curtain Call camp consists of half-day camps in morning and afternoon sessions, each week, from July 1-26.

Graveside Service for Grace Thomas at Arlington National Cemetery

Grace Thomas, a long-time Springfield resident, died April 19 in Haverhill, Mass., of natural causes. She was 82. Thomas was born on June 13, 1930, in Saunderstown, R.I. The former Grace Lorena Matterson, she married Walter R. Thomas in 1950. They were married for 59 years.

Students Design Greenovation Lab

James K. Polk’s Greenovation Lab, which reopened on June 13, showcases the school’s sustainable energy heating and cooling systems and explains to children how they work. Children across the school district will be able to tour the Greenovation Lab to learn such concepts as how to use ground air — which remains at a constant temperature of 56 degrees — to heat and cool classrooms, or how to harness solar power to heat water.

Leaf Collection Begins in Herndon

Annual collection of leaves has begun in Herndon. Residents should rake leaves as close to the curb as possible without blocking storm drains, sidewalks or mailboxes and without impeding vehicular traffic. During leaf collection, grass clippings, shrub clippings and weeds must be placed in 30-gallon kraft, recyclable bags and should continue to be placed out only on your regular trash day. Following the scheduled fall collection, leaves must be placed in 30-gallon kraft recyclable bags and will be picked up on regular trash/yard waste collection days.

Tiny Dancers Voted 'Best Ballet'

Tiny Dancers, located on Main Street in Fairfax, has been voted “Best Ballet or Dance Studio” by readers of Washington Family Magazine. This is the fourth year in a row that the company received the honor. In addition, Tiny Dancers was previously named among the Best in Virginia by Virginia Living Magazine and Best of NoVa by Northern Virginia Magazine. Commenting on the surveys, studio manager Beth Melton said, "Naturally, we're very excited. We work hard to provide the best learning environment possible for young dancers, and it's great to know that the effort is having an impact on our students."
