Marie Elizabeth Krafft, the Martin A. Schwartz Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University, 58, of Tallahassee, Fla, died Nov. 9, 2014 after a two-year long struggle with brain cancer.

An all-girl middle school robotics team from Alexandria is participating in the International Lego League Competition in Toronto, Canada from June 4-7. The team, known as the Dynamite Twisters, are competing against 71 other FIRST Lego League teams from around the world.

Comfort Women Memorial Highlights Human Trafficking

New Peace Garden a beacon of hope for victims.

When members of the Washington Coalition for Comfort Women Issues unveiled a new memorial on May 30, they also illuminated the issue of local human trafficking in Northern Virginia. Elected officials including Supervisor John Foust, Japanese and Korean representatives, and human rights activists gathered to remember the women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery during WWII. Now the memorial stands sunlit on the back lawn of the Fairfax County Government Center, as a reminder for today’s community to take a stand against these crimes against humanity in their own neighborhoods.

Science Honor Society at Madison HS Raises Funds for Antibacterial Playground

Fundraisers and Vienna Rotary grant raise more than $24,000 to-date.

Between a diversity of fundraisers – from Bingo to “dining for dollars” - the National Science Honor Society [NSHS] of James Madison High School has raised more than $24,000 to-date toward construction of an antibacterial waiting room playground at Inova Loudoun Hospital Children’s Emergency Department. The Science Honor Society is working to raise $30,000. Officers of the honor club were charged with creating and executing fundraising projects.

Herndon Town Council Holds Budget Hearings A $48,827,100 budget was presented to residents to discuss at the April 8 Herndon Town Council meeting. The meeting provided residents the opportunity to gather information about the 2014-15 budget. A second hearing will be held April 22, at 7 p.m. at 765 Lynn Street. “In this climate, my proposed FY 2015 budget takes a conservative approach to allocation of town resources while continuing our focus on redevelopment of the downtown, planning for transit-oriented development near Metrorail's Herndon station and maintenance of the quality of our public facilities and infrastructure," stated Herndon Town Manager Arthur Anselene in a press release.

There’s nothing that brings a community together like a bit of friendly competition — at least that’s the idea behind the Celebrate Great Falls Foundation’s annual Holiday Decorating Contest. The foundation presented awards to both the Friends of the Great Falls Library and The Falls Salon on Thursday, Jan. 23, for their holiday spirit displayed in their storefronts and buildings. The two winners were chosen by a community vote that found them both equally deserving of the cash prize of $400.
