Melissa Porfirio, 38, of Springfield’s Crestwood neighborhood was named Virginia’s 2014 Region 4 Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Department of Education. The first- and second-grade teacher at Crestwood Elementary since 2005 will be honored on Friday, Oct. 11, at a banquet and awards program in Richmond.

Reston-based Gin Dance Company (GDC) announced the kickoff of their “Deep eMotion 7500” fundraising campaign. Under the campaign, the company will be seeking support of businesses, organizations and individuals to help raise $7500 by Oct. 25, 2012 to fund upcoming performing arts productions. Among other events planned, GDC has partnered with Barnes & Noble for a fundraising event at the Barnes & Noble in Fairfax on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It was back in the 1970s in McLean. Coming home from school one afternoon, our two younger children, Lisa, 9, and Steven, 7, found a tiny rolled-up ball of fur lying under the maple tree out in front of our Lemon Road house. It was too big to be a baby mouse and too small to be a baby kitten. It turned out to be a baby squirrel which must have fallen out of a nest high up in the tree out in front. Bill hauled out his trusty painter’s ladder, rested it up against the trunk, climbed up and put the tiny creature back into its nest. He said there was another baby already up there.

The Sovereign Grace Co-op Drama Club is staging The Patchwork Girl of Oz and giving ticket sales and all donations to Rancho 3M Orphanage in Guadalupe, Mexico. The production showcases the singing and acting talents of over 30 middle and high school students from Sovereign Grace Home School Co-op in Fairfax.
