From 5-9 p.m., families can enjoy face painting, storytelling, bookmark making, musical performances and an art display while purchasing books for graduations, birthdays or personal enjoyment.

To the Editor: Unjustified Comparison

There is a strong temptation to suspect that today’s NSA leaker Edward Snowden and yesteryear’s Alexandria Gazette editor Edgar Snowden, who took his paper underground rather than cooperate with the U.S. military’s occupation, might be blood relations. If so, notwithstanding the Constitution’s idealistic prohibition of “corruption of blood,” disloyalty to the United States might be hereditary.

Brief: Apply to Police Citizens Academy

The 10-week Alexandria Police Citizens Academy provides an opportunity for residents to learn about various aspects of the Police Department, such as administrative philosophy, internal policies and the guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services. Classes are a combination of lecture and interactive activities. Class topics will include patrol operations, gangs, crime prevention, crime scene investigations, criminal investigations and the Special Operations Team.

Hundreds Take Part in Reston Walk MS

More than 1,600 individuals and 50 volunteers participated in Sunday’s Walk MS presented by Booz Allen Hamilton in Reston, benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s National Capital Chapter. Meteorologist Jacqui Jeras from ABC7-WJLA hosted the starting line program after participants warmed up with Zumba led by Nikki McNutt-Thiem from Full Out Fitness.

Inmates’ Educational Efforts Praised

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office hosted a graduation ceremony July 19 to honor the recent educational accomplishments of 14 inmates at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. Sheriff Dana Lawhorne congratulated the inmates not only for their special achievements but for challenging themselves and investing in their future.

On Saturday, April 20, the C&O Canal Trust, in partnership with the C&O Canal National Historical Park, kicked off the 6th annual C&O Canal Pride Days, the single largest volunteer event to take place in the park.

Washington sportscaster Britt McHenry will be on hand as 26 of the city’s best high school athletes are honored for their academic and athletic excellence at the 57th annual Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Awards dinner May 29 at the Westin Carlyle Hotel. A sports reporter for ABC7/WJLA-TV and NewsChannel 8, McHenry is also the host of News Channel 8's High School Sports Final. Her keynote address will be the first given by a female in the history of the Sportsman’s Club.

Railroad Museum Becomes Wildlife Habitat

With the help of the Clifton Community Woman’s Club (CCWC), The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum has been certified as one of the National Wildlife Federation’s Certified Wildlife Habitats. The NWF is encouraging everyone to pursue turning their backyards into habitats. This is the 40th year for the program and over 150,000 habitats have been certified.

Herndon to Host Labor Day Festival

This year’s 24th annual Herndon Labor Day Festival will feature a wide range of live music, twelve Virginia wineries, local microbreweries, a craft show, sponsorship gallery, culinary demonstrations and a variety of food vendors. The Town of Herndon Parks and Recreation Department produces the event working in conjunction with the Herndon Woman’s Club. Partial proceeds go to scholarship programs.

Fairfax Resident Elayna Tursky Chosen for Jewish Heritage Internship

Fairfax resident Elayna Tursky has been chosen to participate in the Lipper Internship Program at the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in Lower Manhattan. Tursky is one of 15 interns this semester who will learn how to teach twentieth century Jewish history and the Holocaust to young people. Since the Lipper program started in 1998, interns have worked with over 50,000 students from around the Northeastern United States.

The Alexandria Commission for Women held its 33rd annual Salute to Women Awards March 18 in a ceremony that honored 11 individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the community.

The City of Alexandria has been recognized as one of America's Top ArtPlaces, one of only 44 communities to receive the designation in 2013, as a new study revealed a $70.7 million economic impact generated by the local arts industry. In a March 5 event held at The Little Theatre of Alexandria, the City of Alexandria Office of the Arts and the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association announced the findings from the Arts and Economic Prosperity IV national study conducted by Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit arts advocacy organization.
