Artomatic 2012 Runs Through June 23
This week marks the opening of Artomatic 2012, the Washington area's biggest free creative arts event. Artomatic will feature work by more than 1,300 artists, performers, musicians, filmmakers, fashion designers, and creatives of all kinds. Doors open to the public on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m. at 1851 South Bell Street in Crystal City, one block from the Crystal City Metro Station. The festival runs through Saturday, June 23.

Longtime friends Nancy McCormick, Jeanne Nelsen and Liz Rothrock, who jokingly call themselves “poker widows,” have always looked for ways to have fun while their husbands played poker. Recently, the friends of 26 years have discovered that they love to sell their wares at the MCC semi-annual flea market. “This is our fourth time here,” said Nelsen. “We’ve gotten the same booth several times. We have an absolute blast.” Not only do they have fun, they typically make up to $300 in a four-hour day.

Public Works Day Draws Hundreds to Property Yard
Children climb in heavy equipment and wear hardhats.
Every year, during National Public Works Week, the Town of Vienna opens up its property yard on Mill Street to the public. This is no ordinary “open house,” either. The equipment, from ditch diggers to garbage trucks and front loaders and everything a town needs to maintain its infrastructure, is washed clean and spiffy-ed up. The all-afternoon event on May 23 featured snacks, give-outs that kids like—from blowup balls to hardhats—popcorn, tattooing and the chance to climb into a police car without being hauled off to the police station. Kids look forward to Public Works Day all year.

New principal comes from Herndon High School.
Ellen Reilly has been named principal at McLean High School, replacing Dr. Deborah Jackson, who left in July. Reilly comes to McLean High from Herndon High School, where she served as an assistant principal. She previously served as an assistant principal at Oakton High School, and as an American Sign Language teacher at Falls Church High School and Mantua Elementary School.
