Smoking Materials Cause Fire Fairfax County fire investigators say “discarded smoking materials” caused an accidental townhouse fire, April 12, in Centreville. The incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. at 5213 Prairie Willow Way. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear and deck area of the three-story, end unit.

Richard Merritt focuses on health issues.

Born in 1943 in Greenville in Texas, Richard E. Merritt grew up in the Bellaire section of Houston and attended Austin College in Sherman, also in Texas, where he earned a B.A. in psychology. He joined the Peace Corps as a volunteer in India. He was assigned to community development as an extension officer helping to improve crop yields.

Walker Honored by Franklin Band Director Lawrence Walker was at Franklin Middle School when it opened in 1984. And after 30 years with FCPS — 28 of them at Franklin — he retired in June 2012. But his many contributions to the school and to the youth of Fairfax County have not been forgotten. In a ceremony at the May 9 meeting of the School Board, it was revealed that Franklin is naming its music department the Lawrence Walker Music Department. And area music students will still benefit from his expertise when he returns this summer to continue directing Franklin’s annual Band and Orchestra Camp, June 24-July18.
