It was supposed to be a one-time event, a toy drive to help 50 struggling families in the Gum Springs community along the Route 1 corridor. But that was 15 years ago. Today, Capt. Willie Bailey's Firefighters and Friends annual toy drive serves more than 4,000 children in need throughout Northern Virginia.

Nancy Larsen Turner, 83, formerly of Alexandria, died on March 2, 2012 at her home in Boonton, N.J. Born in Ogden, Utah, in 1928, she spent her childhood in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming, where her father worked for the Park Service.

Witty wordplay at MetroStage.
Novelist Franklin Woolsey is a stickler for punctuation. He insists that the hyphen in “gentleman-farmer” suggests a dual nature, thus revealing the subtle meaning behind the hyphenated title of Michael Hollinger’s “Ghost-Writer,” a brilliant, witty production making its Washington-area debut at MetroStage. Not to be confused with the Roman Polanski film of the same name — without the hyphen — Hollinger’s tale is set in 1919 in Woolsey's one-room office in New York City. Much to the chagrin of his wife, Woolsey (Paul Morella) has hired Myra Babbage (Susan Lynskey) to type his novels as he dictates them.

Letter to the Editor: Ensure Healthy City Parks
On Sunday I tended a small pocket park in the heart of Old Town and for the first time found a syringe among the cigarette butts. This park is poorly lit at night, the azaleas are diseased, and were it not for some attention, would be covered in weedy vines. This park has been a collective effort of the neighborhood florist, the city and myself, which after three years is finally a space that people kindly remark on and relax in.

The sisters of the Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter (FCAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrated its 20th anniversary by hosting a Red Shoe Jazz Luncheon at the Hyatt Dulles in Herndon on May 18, with more than 400 guests in attendance. Among the honored guests were members of the Divine Nine, local and out of state dignitaries, and scholarship recipients. Fourteen vendors were spread throughout the reception area to provide attendees with selections of jewelry, clothing, art and Greek paraphernalia. The soulful trio Travelers Band provided live entertainment.
