Program Works to Restore Greenery

Trees still available for planting in communities along the Interstate 95 Corridor.

In an effort to restore greenery to areas that lost trees during construction of the 95 Express Lanes project, Transurban and Fluor, private partners of the project, launched "1,000 Trees in 1,000 Days" to encourage community members to plant trees in areas along the 95 corridor.

Eighty-two year old Maeda* remembers moving as a child to Alexandria from Halifax, N.C. with her parents and five siblings. Their home on Cameron Street did not have electricity — everything was coal or kerosene powered. Coal trains used to run near her home on the way to Fannon’s and often times the train workers would throw some coal off during winter months, keeping her family warm. Maeda also remembers the penny candy stores on Henry Street, the Majestic Restaurant on King Street, and eventually a service station and Dr. Pepper office. And Mutual Ice on Henry Street used to keep full her family’s 50-pound icebox with weekly deliveries.

Among those entering a plea was Patricia Mantilla, 35, of Lorton.

Fairfax Animal Shelter Undergoing Renovation, Expansion

The county is renovating and expanding the Fairfax County Animal Shelter at 4500 West Ox Road to provide state-of-the-art intake and adoption services for the animals that it cares for each year. The addition section was completed in December 2012, with an estimated completion date for the entire project set for July 2013.
