Fairfax Student to Receive Eagle Scout Rank

On June 2, David Luftglass, a junior at W. T. Woodson High School, will receive his Eagle Scout rank at a Court of Honor ceremony with Boy Scout Troop 1533 and community leaders, at Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike in Fairfax.

Bike Summit Oct. 27

The inaugural Fairfax Bike Summit will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at George Mason University. The goal is to bring together current and future bicyclists, bicycle organizations, bike shops and transportation professionals to discuss how to make Fairfax County a better place to live by making bicycling a major component of the transportation system.

Annual Black History Celebration

The Gum Springs Community Center presented the 2013 Annual Black History Celebration on Saturday, March 2 with the theme of “Celebrating Black History from Africa to America and the World Over (The Past, Present and Future).” Close to 300 people attended.

Recording artist and blues preservationist Curtis Blues sang and played at George Washington Middle School on March 2 to more than 300 students and teachers. His educational performance on the Mississippi Delta Blues wove together music, history and an inspirational message about creativity and character. Blues’ visit was sponsored by the Hammerheads, an afterschool club whose members had recently finished building their own cigar box guitars. Tech Ed teacher Kyle Godfrey sponsors the club in partnership with the Alexandria Seaport Foundation.

Pete Piringer of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue reported a water Rescue in the 10550 block of Stable Lane in River Falls around 9:25 p.m. on Monday, May 2. "Several occupants have been removed from vehicles," he said. Other water rescues occurred at 10600 block Falls Road near Bullis School and at Bradley Boulevard and Seven Locks Road, as well as several other places in the county.

The art deco greenhouse at Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church is full of garden plants, herbs, flowers, and open for its annual Spring Plant Sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through May at 1909 Windmill Lane. A variety of old-fashioned annuals, perennials, herbs, and more than 30 varieties of tomatoes including many heirloom varieties are for sale. Arlington Snapshot: ‘The True Adventures of Pinocchio’ To Open Thursday

“The True Adventures of Pinocchio,” the Yorktown spring production, will be staged March 10, 11, and 12 at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee at 2 p.m. on March 12. Tickets are $10 at the door and are available at yhstheatre.org/pinocchio. Premium tickets with reserved seating are $50 each, and there is a 6 p.m. pre-show dinner cafe for $10. On Saturday, March 12, there will be an ice cream social with the cast immediately following the matinee, at a cost of $3.

Trick or Treat So Others May Eat

Girl Scout Troop 6747, of Herndon, braved the cold and wind on Nov. 2 to "Trick or Treat So Others May Eat." The girls wore their Halloween costumes and went door to door collecting can foods that will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank.

Big Train Finish Runner-Up

The Bethesda Big Train finished runner-up in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League playoffs, losing to the Baltimore Redbirds 7-0 in the championship game on Aug. 2.

It’s Vehicle Day

The Greenzaid Early Childhood Center of B’nai Tzedek held its annual Vehicle Day on May 16. The children, ages 2-5, had the thrill of hands-on learning and animated discussions with each of the vehicle’s operators. They climbed through, pretended to drive and honked a lot of horns of the fire engine, ambulance, cherry-picker, school bus, trash truck, SUV and police car. The day was topped off by an ice-cream treat from the Good Humor ice cream truck.

Clutch game-winning bunt by O'Connor; solid pitching by Church, Rogers lead Lake Braddock past McLean.

A perfectly executed bases loaded suicide squeeze play by Dylan O'Connor saved the day for the Lake Braddock Secondary baseball team and provided the winning run for the host Bruins in their dramatic 6-5 extra innings victory over McLean in a Northern Region quarterfinals playoff game played on Memorial Day afternoon.
