Potomac Library to Close Nine Days for Building Upgrades

The Potomac Library, 10101 Glenolden Drive, will be closed temporarily to walk-in and telephone customers from Thursday, May 24, through 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 2. During the closure, the building will undergo interior and exterior painting and installation of new carpeting.

Arlington Snapshot: Protecting Personal Security and the Environment

Arlington’s Solid Waste Bureau offers “free paper document shredding” every month. Watch old medical records, credit card receipts, tax returns, and the like being turned into harmless confetti. It is enough to make an identity thief cry. Scraps are recycled, so some trees are also saved. The shredding takes place on the first Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the county yard, 4300 29th Street, South (near Shirlington, off South Arlington Mill Road). Next event is April 2.

Alexandria Snapshot: Read Across America

To celebrate Read Across America, Cora Kelly School invited Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, Deputy Valarie Wright and other guest readers from the community to read books to their students. The Read Across America campaign is held annually during the anniversary of the birth of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as children’s author Dr. Seuss. Lawhorne and Wright visited Cora Kelly on March 2 and read to students in a classroom and in the library. Lawhorne wore a “Cat in the Hat” hat as he read “Miss Nelson is Missing” and Wright, wearing a big green and white hat, read “The Lady with the Alligator Purse” to the students.

Herndon High Senior to Go to London and Paris

Han Phan, Herndon High School senior and outstanding Career and Technical Education student, was selected to accompany an educational trip to London and Paris. The trip is provided by Education First Educational Tours and will have stops in England and France. The 10-day trip will begin on July 8, in London and will move through multiple locations before ending in Paris on July 18. Phan has been enrolled in Career and Technical Education courses for all four years, including Advanced Information Systems, Accounting, Design Multimedia Web Tech, Entrepreneurship 1 and 2, and Business Management and Virtual Enterprise.

Italian Designer Takes Trunk Show to Benny’s Bar & Grill

Italian Designer Franco Fonati, owner of David 2 Leather Factory, based in Florence, Italy, opted out of holding his annual Trunk & Fashion show at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C this year. Instead, Fonati wanted to have the Trunk & Fashion show in Potomac, 20 miles outside of D.C. for the annual event.

The Artists’ Atelier to Host Book Signing Event

The Artists’ Atelier will host a reception and book signing for local author, Debra Sue Latiolais. Her recently published children’s book “Polly and her Pigtails” has received the highest honor awarded by the Mom’s Choice Awards. “Polly and her Pigtails” is the first book in a series of generational storytelling.
