The Beauty of Fall

This week at McLean Children's Academy, students, parent volunteers and teachers had a great time planting fall flowers. MCA is located at the corner of Elm Street and Rt 123 in McLean. The director, Sarah Bowlen, said "We always try to have the front of the school look nice so the neighborhood can enjoy it. Pansies stay beautiful even through the winter." This gardening adventure was part of a science lesson for the children.

Herndon Elementary Holds Reflections Ceremony

Herndon Elementary School celebrated their Reflections participants on Wednesday, Dec. 4. PTA Reflections is part of the National PTA art competition in which participants enter in various artistic mediums. The theme this year was "Believe, Dream, Inspire." Great Falls Resident Wins Conference Championship with MIT

Tim Higgins of Great Falls is a member of the 2013 – 2014 New England Men’s and Women’s Conference (NEWMAC) championship basketball team. Higgins, a freshman, plays for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) men’s basketball team. After winning four games and losing four games during February, MIT went on a roll and swept the conference playoffs beating last year’s champion WPI in a semifinal game, and outlasting Springfield College in the championship game. With the NEWMAC conference win, the MIT Engineers received an automatic bid to the NCAA basketball tournament. Tim attended and played basketball for Paul VI high school in Fairfax and was part of their 2012 undefeated team.

Coyotes Found in Arlington

While Arlington County naturalists and community members have assumed that Arlington has had coyotes, only now do they have visual proof. See Arlington's coyote on You Tube. Earlier this month a game camera at Potomac Overlook Regional Park took the first video of the coyote. Last year, Arlington County published its “Wildlife of Arlington: A Natural Resource Heritage Technical Report,” which reported that "it is considered likely that coyotes have found their way into Arlington, but they are extremely cautious, range very widely and move primarily at night." The coyote is not part of the historical native fauna of Virginia but is a master at adaptability and has steadily moved from its western haunts.

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will host a community meeting to discuss two proposed bicycle improvements in Springfield and Braddock Districts on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, 6:30 - 8 p.m., in the cafeteria of Irving Middle School, 8100 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield.
