Pumpkin Patch, Artfest Come to McLean

Annual fall events are on the way.

Few things are as synonymous with fall as the pumpkin, which adorns porches, sidewalks and stoops throughout the season. This year, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in McLean will have thousands of pumpkins for sale, starting Saturday, Oct. 5. The pumpkins are brought in from a Navajo reservation in New Mexico. The church shares the profits from sold pumpkins with the Navajos, and the remaining ones are donated to an animal refuge site to be used as feed.

Local Centers Host Free Trick-or-treating

The merchants of Franklin Farm Village Center in Herndon, Colonnade at Union Mill in Clifton and Centrewood Plaza in Centreville are hosting free trick-or-treating on Saturday, Oct. 26, rain or shine. All children dressed in their Halloween costumes will receive candy and other goodies from participating businesses from noon to 2 p.m. at Franklin Farm Village Center, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Colonnade at Union Mill and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Centrewood Plaza. Entertainment will include a balloon artist and magician at each center.

Last month the disAbility Law Center (dLCV) issued a report on the condition of mental health services in Virginia. It is an eye-opening report: Broken Promises, the Failure of Mental Health Services in Virginia. Its findings are direct: “Despite the promises of reform to the mental health service system in the last decade, Virginia’s mental health services system fails to serve many of those in need of its services.”

Governor McAuliffe Sets the Stage

Each year the Governor of Virginia addresses a joint assembly of the House of Delegates and the State Senate in a speech not unlike the President’s State of the Union address except that the Governor provides a “State of the Commonwealth” as well as his recommendations for legislative action. Last week I heard the 35th such speech since I have been a member of the House of Delegates. I think Gov. Terry McAuliffe made the best of any of the speeches I have heard over my career in the legislature.

Beach Mill Bridge Postponed

The Virginia Department of Transportation has postponed the scheduled replacement of the bridge over Nichols Run on Beach Mill Road. Originally scheduled to close from Aug. 13 to December, construction has been pushed back, and will start after the 2012-13 school year lets out.

Ironically Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus moved into the Richmond Coliseum for its annual stand at the same time last week that a few blocks away the General Assembly concluded its annual meeting and members packed up and went home.
