Reston Little Leaguers Kick Off New Season

Parade marks Opening Day.

Although there was no official headcount, judging by the size of the crowds it’s just possible that all 692 registered players, and their moms, dads, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents all turned out for the 20th Annual Reston Little League (RLL) Opening Day Parade through Reston Town Center.

Although this first-grader at Potomac Elementary should’ve been thrilled to lose his first upper top tooth while riding the school bus, the napkin where he stashed it had been tossed into the bus’s trash can when the tooth had seemingly disappeared from it.

LTA performance raises $7,500 for local charities.

The madness and mayhem, not to mention the meat pies, were the theme of the night as Brooke Curran and ACT's Running Brooke Fund raised more than $7,500 for local charities including ACTion Alexandria, Community Lodgings, The Reading Connection, Child and Family Network Centers and Girls on the Run at a special benefit performance of “Sweeney Todd” Aug. 7 at The Little Theatre of Alexandria. “This is an incredible cause,” said Elizabeth Luchessi, a Running Brooke Fund supporter and sponsor of the LTA performance. “It's really great seeing the traction that Brooke is getting and all the impact she is having on the community.” In attendance were representatives from Curran's beneficiary organizations, including Community Lodgings executive director Bonnie Baxley. “We are so grateful to Brooke for all she has done to support us,” Baxley said.

Board Attitude Found Rude

To the Editor: On May 15, Amy Smith, a resident of the Nethergate community, located at the intersection of Bashford and Abingdon Roads, attended a meeting of the Board of Architecture Review (BAR) in order to petition the Board for a Certificate of Appropriateness, allowing her to retain the new windows she had installed which in part were made of vinyl. I attended this meeting and was stunned by the rudeness of this board.

Such is the life of senior Lisa Solheim in Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology’s production of “Don’t Count on Forever.”

Two Area Residents Elected to Hope Connections Board

Hope Connections for Cancer Support, the local nonprofit organization whose mission is to help people with cancer and their loved ones deal with the emotional and physical impact of the disease, has elected four new members to its Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is made up of 19 members; the four new members include two from Fairfax County: Sharon Glickman and James J. Lynch, Ph.D.

Why Churchill Road II

To the Editor: After reading Gina Manning’s letter to the editor in the Sept. 25 edition [“Why Churchill Road?”], I am prompted to express my appreciation for the Connection’s coverage of Churchill Road Elementary School and other area schools. In an era when newspapers are working with reduced staffs and resources, we are fortunate to receive a weekly newspaper that features local news including updates of our area schools.
