The Oakton High girls’ basketball team is annually a formidable team and one of the top outfits in the state of Virginia. The Cougars won region crowns in 2009 and 2010. Last year, after winning the Concorde District tournament title and then reaching the Northern Region tournament semifinals, they saw their season end with a round of four defeat to West Springfield High. That setback, which ended the Cougars’ season and prevented them from qualifying for the state tournament, was Oakton’s first and only loss of the season and ended their hopes of winning a third straight region crown.

If you ask the folks at Senior Services of Alexandria, a nonprofit organization that provides direct services and programs to the city’s aging population, Alexandria is a great place to be a senior. Both Janet Barnett, Senior Services’ executive director, and Mary Lee Anderson, SSA’s Senior Resource Center director, agree that Alexandria’s government and nonprofit partners are committed to caring for the city’s aging population. “We are a very caring community,” said Barnett. “Alexandria is a good place to be and there are services available…it’s a win-win for all ages.”

Fairfax County police are investigating a fatal crash early Monday morning that took the life of George Tabash, 27, of Centreville. It happened Dec. 31, around 1:45 a.m., on Route 28 on the I-66 overpass.

Fairfax County police charged a Centreville man with several offenses – including felony hit-and-run – after he allegedly tailgated and struck another vehicle and then fled. He is 25-year-old Juan Carlos Gudiel.
