No sooner had Community Lodgings Executive Director Bonnie Baxley been presented a check for $30,000 from Walmart store manager William Hunsucker, she asked for more. “Do you have any tents?” she queried as those gathered Aug. 8 at the Community Lodgings Fifer Family Learning Center laughed. “We just found out that we need one more tent for an upcoming event and everyone knows I'm not shy about letting people know what we need.”

He, like many other veterans, wanted to know what happened to the country and its people. Tecklenberg began his personal journey by going back to Vietnam twice, once in 2003 and then again in 2004.

McLean Doctor Named to Hope Connections Board

Hope Connections for Cancer Support, the local nonprofit whose mission is to help people with cancer and their loved ones deal with the emotional and physical impact of the disease, has named three new members to its Medical Advisory Board (MAB). The 16-member MAB is made up of oncologists and other medical professionals from local hospitals and private practices who refer patients to Hope Connections and help to identify the best possible speakers for Hope Connections educational workshops.

Four Plead Guilty: Real Estate Fraud

Four people pleaded guilty Tuesday, Feb. 19, in federal court in Alexandria to conspiring to fraudulently take over the titles of homes in Washington, D.C., without the real property owners’ knowledge, selling those homes and keeping the profit. Among those entering a plea was Melissa McWilliams, 35, of Chantilly.

Letter: Volunteers Make Democracy Work

During my last canvassing on Nov. 5, I met a young female canvasser who truly exhibited outstanding determination in participating in the Get-Out-To-Vote effort of the Obama campaign. I spoke to Natalie Erdossy, and learned that Natalie brought her three very young children along during the canvassing, and that her husband was doing a second tour in Afghanistan with the State Department. She said that she was recruited by her neighbor Ellen Graves and she wanted to do her part. What I find so outstanding is that she was driven by a purpose greater that her immediate personal comfort.

Great Falls Seniors Group Seeks Input

Group looks for feedback from seniors with needs, interested volunteers.

The Great Falls Citizens Association’s Seniors Group is seeking input from the community’s senior population, as well as those who might be interested in volunteering to provide services to seniors. The group, which hosted a town hall meeting last year, hopes to work with community organizations such as the Great Falls Ecumenical Council, Share, Inc and other nonprofits.
