Oak Hill Students “Plant It” With Dominion
On Arbor Day, April 26, the third-graders at Oak Hill Elementary School had a chance to get their hands dirty and plant some trees. It was all part of Dominion Virginia Power’s environmental program Project Plant It!, a fun and educational way to help the children learn about trees and the environment.

Your coverage of the July 4th Barbeque at Mubarak Mosque was a pleasure to read and look at. As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I wanted to say thank you for this. As an attendee, I felt so much pride on that very day. I was able to celebrate all the major facets of my life come together on that very special day. I was able to celebrate my Muslim identity and American identity together without any conflict because loyalty is a part of my faith. I was able to share this sentiment of loyalty and love with friends, family, and guests of the community
Dominion Virginia Power, Assistance League of Northern Virginia Pack Food Bags
As part of their Weekend Food for Kids program, Assistance League of Northern Virginia, in collaboration with Dominion Virginia Power, purchased food and packed over 11,900 individual food bags for hungry children during the 2012-2013 school year. Dominion Virginia Power provided a $20,000 grant to support this program. In addition, 160 Dominion volunteers donated over 800 hours to help 44 Assistance League volunteers feed 1,500 students who qualify for free and reduced-priced lunches in five schools in Prince William County, Fairfax County, Falls Church and the city of Alexandria. The students received nutritious supplementary food to take home for the weekend on a monthly basis.

Good government isn’t as hard as politicians make it out to be. It’s really about putting the people first. The IRS certainly wasn’t putting the people first when it harassed, humiliated and held up the applications of conservative groups. Nor when it held off on releasing the $125 million share owed to Virginia as part of a Medicaid fraud settlement. It did just the opposite.

Putting a Name and Face on Chronically Homeless
At 4 a.m., under a full moon, more than 200 volunteers fanned out across Fairfax County on Monday, Feb. 25, to identify the more than 300 people who are literally homeless, living in cars, on the street or in the woods around the county. Coordinated by the Fairfax-Falls Church Partnership to End Homelessness, the weeklong effort is part of the 100,000 Homes campaign, an intensive approach to identify and find homes for the chronically homeless.

Clean-up of Tire Dump in Lorton Ongoing
In early December 2014, the Fairfax County Fire Marshal issued a notice of violation to AAAACo Used Auto Parts in Lorton for more than 1,000 used tires on their property and overflowing into Giles Run, according to Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department spokesman Dan Schmidt.

Springfield: St. Mark’s Program Supports Lynbrook Elementary
Several Lynbrook Elementary School students spent the first few weeks of May making “Hug Pillows” as part of a weekly after-school program run by members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Springfield.
Fun Fair at Chesterbrook Elementary
Chesterbrook Elementary School held its Fun Fair on Saturday, March 15. One of the booths at the Fair was developed as part of Chesterbrook's Service Learning Project. Through the Atitlan Education Project, a non-profit program of Congressional District Programs, Chesterbrook students help Escuela Caracol, a school in Guatemala. The booth had informational materials and also sold handcrafted goods that were made in the Guatemalan village where Escuela Caracol is located. Chesterbrook teacher, Betsy Butler, staffed the booth and also sold scarves she had knitted. The funds made from booth sales will be used by Escuela Caracol to help support scholarships for the local Mayan children and for books and art supplies for the school. Herndon Business Owner Raises Funds for Fisher House Foundation
On Thursday, June 23, Sean Moran, franchise owner of Wireless Zone in Herndon and South Riding, Virginia, presented Fisher House Foundation a check for $758 as part of his continued support for the charity.
