Alexandria Brief: SSA Receives $1,500 Grant
Senior Services of Alexandria has received a $1,500 grant from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in Subaru of America’s eighth annual Share the Love Event. During the event held Nov. 22, 2015 through Jan. 2, 2016, Subaru of America, Inc. donated $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charities, including Meals on Wheels America, of which SSA is a Member.

Mount Vernon's Alliyah Stevens placed in three events at the 5A state indoor track meet on Monday andTuesday in Hampton. Stevens placed third in the triple jump (37-8 1/2), fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.5) and fifth in the long jump (17-7).

Gorsuch Re-Elected Board Chairman
At its organizational meeting on July 2, the Alexandria School Board voted to re-elect Sheryl Gorsuch as chairman and Helen Morris as vice chairman for the remainder of 2012. The current board will serve through Dec. 31, after which members elected by City of Alexandria voters on Nov. 6 will take office.

The Potomac Village farmers market opened on Thursday, May 1 and will be open 2 - 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays until October at Potomac United Methodist Church at the corner of Falls Road and Democracy Boulevard.
Our Daily Bread Celebrates 30th Anniversary
Fairfax-based charity Our Daily Bread celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 2 at “Do You See What I See?” in association with Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts. The evening featured an art show with works by local artists, a variety of performances, wine and appetizers from Dolce Vita and a celebration of Our Daily Bread's work to empower struggling families throughout the Fairfax County area to move from need to self-sufficiency.
Letter: Counter-arguments Missing
I recently read the Reston Connection article, "What's Offensive about Redskins Pride?" (July 2-8, 2014) and found it lacked balance. Where were the counter-arguments (in favor of changing the name of the team)? I didn't see any and they're necessary to make a debate credible.
