The Bishop O'Connell football team opened its 2014 season with a 56-14 victory over rival Paul VI on Aug. 29 in Fairfax. The Knights' home opener is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 against Bishop Ireton (1-0).

Alexandria resident Sandi Mara has been re-elected to the Board of Directors at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The Board of Directors is made up of 15 elected volunteers who are elected to serve two-year terms.
Cell Tower Proposal Rejected
Heritage Presbyterian Church has rejected a proposal from Milestone Communications to erect a tree monopole cell tower on its property in the Waynewood/Fort Hunt neighborhood. Heritage’s Session, its governing body which is comprised of 12 elders, met on May 23 to finalize its deliberations and vote on the issue. The proposal was voted down by a 10-2 margin.
Westfield Girls Varsity Falls to Oakton 54-44
The Westfield Bulldogs girls varsity basketball team traveled to Oakton to take on #11 Oakton on Jan. 27.
Norwood to Add Pre-K Class in Bethesda

Mount Vernon: 400 Evacuated from River Towers
Fairfax County firefighters evacuated 400 residents from one of three River Towers condo buildings Sunday afternoon Oct. 2 following reports there was structural damage and residents felt the building shake.

Harvest Happenings Return to McLean Community Center
Harvest Happenings, McLean Community Center’s annual fall festival for children ages 3-8, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 24. General admission is $5 at the door; however, infants to 36-month-old children can attend for free. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.
