Ready for the Bluebells in Great Falls
The most spectacular wildflower display in Great Falls coincides with a new oil-painting exhibit by a local artist.
The Tidal Basin in Washington may have its famous cherry blossoms, but Great Falls residents need only walk down to the river for a display of shimmering, luminescent blue that some botanists say is the better show: the annual explosion of a riverine wildflower called the Virginia Bluebell.

When the doors opened at the Vienna Community Center on June 8, welcoming buyers to the annual Historic Vienna, Inc. [HVI] book sale, more than 25,000 books awaited them. And this is one well-organized book sale. Books were arranged by genre, from mystery and novels to reference books and cookbooks. “Treasures,” those books that are rare or vintage, have their own nook.
Tuberculosis Clinic Set Up at Lee High School

Following reports that as many as 430 students and faculty at Robert E. Lee High School could have been exposed to tuberculosis, Fairfax County Health Department officials set up a special clinic on Friday, June 21, to provide testing and information on the infectious disease.
Honoring Connor
Parents honor son through pediatric cancer foundation.
Connor Robert White was only six months old when he passed away from a rare form of childhood cancer. Connor was born on July 6, 2012. “He was the easiest child. He was the happiest child…” said Beth White, Connor’s mom. “But that’s how we knew something was wrong initially. He was all the sudden fussy crying.”
Herndon Elementary Holds Family Science Night
Science Night coincides with Fall Book Fair.
Herndon Elementary School opened the evening of Nov. 18, for students and families to participate in the Family Science Night. Special guests that evening were the Children’s Science Center, which set up 12 hands--on stations or a mobile lab in the gymnasium for kids to witness and view science related matter. “This is our first time inviting the Children’s Science Center to Herndon Elementary,” said Elizabeth Gibson, teacher of Advanced Academic Resources.
Oktoberfest Returns to Reston Town Center
Northern Virginia’s largest outdoor fall festival is Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11-13.
The beer and wine will be flowing at Oktoberfest Reston produced by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, www.OktoberfestReston.com, the largest fall festival in Northern Virginia drawing crowds of up to 85,000 over three days. This event features the best in fall brews with traditional Oktoberfest fare from area restaurants.

“Ava B” will turn 5 years old early next year, and spent more than half of her young life dealing with leukemia. She was diagnosed with pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December 2011 at age 2. Since then, she has undergone more than 20 months of chemotherapy, and seen her family and friends rally around her.

Herndon Community Center Holds Annual Arts and Crafts Show
Local artists and entrepreneurs arrive for Sunday show despite snow.
More than 50 local artists came to the Herndon Community Center located at 814 Ferndale Avenue for the 35th Annual Arts and Crafts Show. Kevin L. Mitchell, resident of Fredricksburg arrived with a display of handcrafted wire sculpture figures. "Over the years I discovered my artistic voice, and I started bringing my works to comic conventions this year," said Mitchell. He has a variety of designs in his catalog from sports figures to science fiction themed figures.
