An Earth Day celebration wouldn’t be complete without ponies and food trucks. At least the combined Earth Day and Arbor Day event in Fairfax County, known as SpringFest Fairfax, wouldn’t.

Arlington Celebrates Richard Thompson

Local cartoonist’s work exhibited in film and book at Arlington Central Library

Nick Galifinakis and David Apatoff had a problem. They wanted to keep meeting at the home of fellow cartoonist Richard Thompson, creator of Washington Post comic Richard’s Poor Almanac and his nationally syndicated comic Cul de Sac, to chat and to pour over his work, but were afraid that Thompson would kick them out if they didn’t come up with a good reason to stay. This was the origin of “The Art of Richard Thompson.” Though likely apocryphal, the story is indicative of the reverence and humor with which the editors compiled the collection.

iPads Come Into the Classroom

Sixty first and second graders at Keene Mill try out these devices during the school day.

Tablets and iPads in the hands of 6-year-olds is not such an unusual sight anymore, and now these devices are being used in the classroom. At Keene Mill Elementary School, 60 iPads are in the hands of first and second grade students, and being used to “change the time, place and pace of learning.”

December at the McLean Community Center

The McLean Community Center is offering the following activities in December. Residents of the Center’s tax district, Small District One-A Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. Unless otherwise indicated, all activities will be held at the Center, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.

On Oct. 5, Jill’s House was open to visitors to tour the 42,000-square-foot center. A non-profit organization providing respite care for children with special needs, Jill’s House serves more than 500 families.

Finalists were recognized at the ArtSpace Herndon Expressions Portrait Exhibit during the Saturday, Oct. 11 artists reception. The art exhibit displays more than 20 portrait pieces composed by 18 artists.

Group provides airline tickets to military families visiting injured loved one.

A family receives the devastating call that their son, serving in the Afghanistan, had life-threatening injuries from an IED and was being air-lifted to Walter Reed National Medical Military Center. They were told to start driving to the nearest airport. The hospital staff would do what they could to keep their son alive until they got there, even though it was a five-hour flight.

McLean Theater Co. Presents ‘Catch Me If You Can’

Local high school brings Broadway to D.C.-area.

Will they catch Frank? The McLean Theater Company is premiering the musical “Catch Me If You Can,” a story of the world’s greatest con man and his worldly misadventures, to the D.C. metro area this week. “The story is so enticing for a director,” said theater teacher and director Amy Poe.

Lorton residents use Legos to reinforce education, fun.

It’s no secret that kids love building with Legos. But the fun can also be educational, as Lorton residents Jenny and Paul Ahn have recently discovered. The Ahns have been integrating the fun of Legos with educational concepts since starting a Bricks 4 Kidz franchise in the area in March.

Herndon Awaits Construction Of New Mural

While the region has been anticipating the incoming Silver Line, the Town of Herndon has taken steps to become an art friendly town. Some of these steps include the design of murals. The Council for the Arts of Herndon, the Town of Herndon’s officially designated local arts agency orchestrated the design of another mural in downtown Herndon. The next project will be one at the Dominion Animal Hospital at 795 Station Street.

Plan For Herndon Parkway and Sterling Road Intersection Approved

Council members hope plan will relieve congestion and improve safety.

Recently the Herndon Town Council and Mayor Lisa Merkel have been addressing several infrastructure issues, amongst them the overcrowding of students at Herndon Elementary Schools. With developments of Silver Line and soon completion of phase 1 for the Silver Line, the Town Council has been brought to address the traffic flow situations at the Herndon Parkway and Sterling Road intersection.

“If you don’t do homework, you get bad grades,” Dowling asserted. The boys are receiving after school homework assistance at the Robinson Square community center, owned by Fairfax County and operated by Fairfax-based non-profit FACETS.
