At Langston Hughes

<bt>On Tuesday, Feb. 26, Langston Hughes students participated in the Annual Mathematics Contest. The contest took place during an extended T.A., starting at 7:35 a.m. and continuing until 8:15 a.m. The contest was given to middle schools across Virginia by the Virginia Mathematics League and middle-school students all across Virginia participated in the contest. In the past, Langston Hughes School had done very well in the contest, and it hopes to continue the tradition this year.

The test consisted of 40 questions, which needed to be answered in a 30-minute period. Each correct answer on the contest counted as one point toward the score, and an incorrect answer did not receive any credit.

A score of 30 is reached by very few students, and a score of 15 is an average score. Use of calculators is optional on this contest because the math is on grade level, so it is not impossible for students to take the test without a calculator.

The head of the math department Mrs. Lundy said, "It is exciting to have the whole school participate in the contest because we always find undiscovered talent."
