Creek Week Debuts

After taking part in the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup, Potomac residents now can turn their attention to the first ever Cabin John Creek Week, a week-long series of events culminating with the annual Cabin John Creek Cleanup on Saturday, April 27. The Friends of Cabin John Creek Watershed is sponsoring three events, listed below. See www.cabinjohn.org/focjcw for complete details.

<sh>Cabin John Creek Cleanup

<bt>Saturday, April 27, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon

The following are cleanup sites where residents can get involved in the Creek Cleanup. Interested residents should call the listed contact people if they plan to attend or have questions.

Wear long pants and a hat, and shoes that can get wet if necessary. Bring your own gloves if you have them, but gloves will be available.  Trash bags and refreshments provided.

Youth under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Community service credits are available to students who sign the attendance sheet.

<cal1>Rockville Site

<cal2>Cleanup area is Creek from Wootton Parkway north to Elwood

Smith Park. Meet at 9:30 a.m. in Dogwood Park at the bridge at Edmonston Drive and Cabin John Parkway.

Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Seven Locks Elementary School, located at NW intersection of Bradley and Seven Locks Rd.

<cal2>Cleanup area is Creek next to Cindy Lane (halfway between River Road and Bradley Blvd.)

<cal2>Cleanup area is Creek between Seven Locks Rd and River Road, and a bit upstream of River Rd.

<cal2>Cleanup area is Creek near Seven Locks Road in Cabin John at intersection of Cypress Grove Lane. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Creek trail entrance immediately on other side of road from Cypress Grove Lane.  Lots of parking available at dirt lot next to Beltway overpass.

<cal2>Cleanup area is Creek between MacArthur Blvd. and upstream toward Seven Locks Rd.

Meet at 9:30 a.m. at tennis courts parking lot immediately on west side (Cabin John side) of Cabin John Bridge (one-lane bridge) on MacArthur Blvd.

<sh>Quarterly Creek Monitoring

<cal1>Saturday, April 20, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon

<cal2>A quarterly stream sampling of benthic macro-invertebrates will be taken at eight sites along the Creek and its tributaries. The data collected from this event will go to the County and the State to help with their assessment of the health of the Creek and watershed.

Friends of Cabin John Creek Watershed have training sessions once or twice a year for new monitors, but the knowledge can be picked up relatively easily during the sessions themselves.

<sh>WSSC and DEP Presentations

<cal1>Tuesday, April 23, 7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

<cal2>Clara Barton Community Center, 7425 MacArthur Blvd, 301-229-0010. Located at the first intersection on the Cabin John Side of the one-lane bridge.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission and the County Department of Environmental Protection will give presentations at the Clara Barton Community Center in Cabin John on (1) the upcoming study and future of the sewer that runs along the Cabin John Creek, and (2) the County's watershed and stream restoration efforts to combat stormwater runoff.
