News in Brief

<sh>False Report Filed

<bt>Charges are pending against a 14-year-old Herndon girl for filing a false police report. On Monday, April 15 a 14-year-old Herndon girl reported to police that she had been abducted and sexually assaulted. Investigation has revealed that the story was apparently made up as an excuse for returning home late. Filing a false police report is a Class 1 misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to 12 months in jail and/or a fine up to $2,500, however the Juvenile Justice System allows for alternative methods.

"Making a false police report is a very serious offense and it sends unnecessary panic throughout the community," said Herndon Police Chief Toussaint E. Summers, Jr. "I personally spoke to parents who were concerned for their children's safety as a result of this incident. While I'm very glad to report this is a false report, the juvenile's action caused the community safety concerns and the police department spent many man hours investigating this incident at great expense to taxpayers," he said.
