Wellness Important at Paul Spring

Wellness comes in many forms at Paul Spring Retirement Community. One of the most recent options for residents is The Paul Spring Wellness Center, which opened a few months ago.

The Wellness Center provides access to in-house quality care, in other words, it provides residents with an on-site doctor.

Dr. John J. Kim of Landmark Internal Medicine on Duke Street is available at Paul Spring every Thursday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. A special room for the Wellness Center has been provided and residents make appointments just as they would for any doctor. The difference is that they only have to travel down the hall to get there.

Dr. Kim received an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and a medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville. He completed an Internship in Internal Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he established Landmark Internal Medicine on Duke Street.

Some of the services that are offered at the Wellness Center include check-ups, vaccinations and routine blood tests. Physical therapy is currently available and a chiropractor and massage therapist will soon join the wellness team.

"A lot of residents don't have their own doctor. We decided that a wellness center was a good idea," said Marketing Manager Barbara Sullivan. "An internist is good for this age group who is looking for somebody who understands their needs."

A FOCUS ON WELLNESS is not new at Paul Spring. Two years ago, Recreation Director, Darnall Graham, began the Sittercise program. Every morning at 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., she takes residents through a series of stretches for the upper body.

"It keeps them moving," said Sullivan.

With a combination of both standing and seated routines, Graham starts them off with easy stretches.

"Stand in position A," she directs, and the residents, who all seem to know the drill, oblige. Later she will ask them to stand in position B to do other routines, while some exercises require the use of small exercise balls.
