<cal2>The Loudoun Museum has scheduled four days - Sept. 4-7 - of special events and programs to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the Confederate Army's invasion of Maryland and the installation of a Civil War Trails marker. The Virginia Civil War Trails program has designated the Museum as a location for this new wayside marker, the first stop of "The Antietam Campaign Loop."

Sept. 4: Ceremony, Book Signing and Tour Highlighting the Unveiling of Civil War Trails "The Antietam Campaign Loop" Interpretive Marker

Sept. 5: Lecture and Book Signing by Noted Biographer, John M. Taylor 7 p.m.

Sept. 6: Evening Exhibit Tours and Loudoun Border Guards Fife and Drum Performance from 6-9 p.m. during the Leesburg First Friday Gallery Walk. New Antietam related items will be on display and snacks and punch will be served in the Loudoun Museum Shop (log cabin) during the Loudoun Border Guards Fife and Drum Corps 7 p.m. performance.

Sept. 7: "Leesburg and the Battle of Antietam Creek" Walking Tours Museum Director of Education Mark Summers and Curator Randy Davis will host special walking tours of downtown Leesburg at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. focusing on the significance of Leesburg to the invasion of Maryland. Tours are $4 per person.

The Loudoun Museum is located at 16 Loudoun Street S.W in Leesburg. Regular hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults; $1 for seniors, teachers and students; and free for Museum members and children under 11. Pumpkinville 2002 at Sunshine Farms, 19270 James Monroe Highway, Leesburg. Open every day during October. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission includes a patch pumpkin, unlimited hayrides, all-you-can-eat apples, all-you-can-drink cider and access to the Giant Hill Slides, Hay Tunnels, a Hay Maze and Tree Swing. Weekday prices: $5.50 per person, under 2 free (pumpkin $2). Groups with 10 or more receive one chaperone free for every five kids. (Does not include pumpkin). Afternoon Tea at Oatlands beginning Friday, Sept. 13 and continuing each Friday through Oct. 18. Two seatings will take place at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and reservations are now being accepted. Cost: $14.95 (excluding tax) per adult and $7.95 (excluding tax) for children 8 and under. Advance reservations must be made and pre-paid by credit card. In addition, a "Tea and Tour" package is available with a reduced rate to tour the 1804 Oatlands mansion and gardens. The reduced tour rate is 45 when purchased at the time that the tea reservations are made. Holiday reservations are also being taken. Holiday teas begin on Nov. 21 and will be served on most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 28. Make reservations by calling 703-777-3174 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesdays only. No reservations will be taken outside of these hours. Proceeds benefit the continuing work at Oatlands.

Faculty art exhibit. The Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) will exhibit the works of its art faculty starting Aug. 18 and running through Sept. 14. The exhibit will take place in the gallery of the newly opened Waddell Building. Recent works by Loudoun's full-time art faculty, Donald Depuydt, Julia Turner, Susan Weissman, David Whipple and Cathy Wilkin will include examples of different media, such as painting, photography, printmaking and stained glass. Summer Suess Stories at UUS. Children and adults alike can look forward to "The Lorax," "The First of Octember" and "King Looie Katz," to name a few that will be read every Sunday until Sept. 1. The Unitarian Universalists meet for worship Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at the Sterling Community Center Annex at the intersection of W. Church Road and Shaw Road. Knitting and Crochet Group. For women who are 55 years of age and older. Meet at the Loudoun County Senior Center at Cascades Marketplace each Friday at 10 a.m. to make afghans, lap robes, baby hats and sweaters. The group has donated over 300 items to the Loudoun County Homeless Shelter, the Northern Virginia Ronald McDonald House, the Loudoun Hospital Center and the Long Term Care Unit at Loudoun Hospital. The yarn is donated to the Senior Center from individuals in the community and from the Good Shepherd Alliance Inc. The group is accepting donations of yarn and needles and donations to purchase yarn, that will help continue with the special projects. A progressive educational program for children 2-4 years begins in September in Sterling. The learning program for preschool children provides an appropriately free environment for a child to engage in imaginative play and uncover their creative genius. The curriculum brings together artistic, academic and practical applications to learning, emphasizing the whole child. Limited enrollment available. Saturday, May 4-Sunday, Oct. 27: Free, guided tours of the site of the Oct. 21, 1861, Battle of Ball's Bluff, will be lead by volunteers. They will tell about the largest Civil War engagement in Loudoun County. For more information call 703-737-7800.

The works of local artist Carmen Barros Howell will be on display at Chilean Embassy during the month of September. The show opening will be hosted by the Ambassador of Chile and Mrs. Bianchi on Thursday, Sept. 5, in conjunction with the launching of the Arts Latino Web site. Howell's charcoal drawings, metal sculptures and terra-cotta figures will be on display. Born in Santiago, Chile, Howell received a degree in fine arts at the University of Chile. Howell and her husband moved to Loudoun in the late '60s. She has taught art at the Loudoun Valley Community Center, Emerick Elementary School in Purcellville, Loudoun Country Day School in Leesburg, and was director of the Loudoun Academy of the Arts until this year when she decided to devote more time to her own work. Currently, Howell is a gallery artist at Gallery 222.
