More than 70 West Springfield High students who have maintained at least a 3.4 grade point average in their history classes were inducted into the History Honor Society at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. West Springfield history teacher Jim Percoco, author of "A Passion for the Past, was the guest speaker.

Teenagers from a dozen local high will wrap thousands of packages this holiday season at Fair Oaks Shopping Center to raise funds for the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), a marketing organization for students. Located on the lower level near Lord & Taylor, students at the Holiday Gift Wrap Center charge a nominal fee for wrapping packages through Dec. 24. All proceeds benefit the Fairfax County Public Schools' DECA program. Funds earned this year will help to send students to a national marketing competition in Orlando, Fla.

Holiday Gift Store will be open Nov. 29-Dec. 30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, noon to 6 p.m. Sundays, 3 to 7 p.m., Dec. 6,13,16-20, 6693-B Springfield Mall, Springfield. Marketing students in Fairfax County Public Schools’ Classroom-on-the-Mall program will sponsor “Santa’s Little Helpers,” a store for shoppers age 3-12. Call 703-971-3289.

The MOMS Club of Burke is sponsoring a Pre-school Fair as a service to parents in the community. It is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Burke Volunteer Fire Department Meeting Hall, 9501 Old Burke Lake Road in Burke. The fair is free and is open to the public. Over 20 Burke and surrounding area preschools are planning to attend. Parents are invited to come and gather information about preschools in the area and talk with all of the attending preschool directors all in one location. Long & Foster Real Estate is offering a $125,000 Scholarship Program for well-rounded graduating high school seniors entering an accredited four-year college or university. All applications must be received by the deadline date of March 3, 2003, in order for the selection committee, comprised of local members of academia, to select the final scholarship winners by Spring 2003.

The Long & Foster Scholarship Program will award $1,000 to each of 125 worthy recipients throughout the region for the 2003-2004 academic year. The monetary scholarship award will be made payable directly to the college or university in the student's name. Once the winners have been selected the scholarships will be awarded beginning May 1, 2003. Applications for the Long & Foster Scholarship Program can be obtained from any of Long & Foster's 200 residential sales offices located throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, from high school guidance counselors, via Long & Foster's Web Site at www.longandfoster.com/scholarship or by calling 1-703-359-1750 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

The City of Fairfax Band is offering a $2,000 scholarship to the winner of its 2003 Young Artists Competition. All Northern Virgnia high school juniors and seniors are eligible. The recipient also will make a special guest appearance with the City of Fairfax Band featuring guest conductor David Holsinger on Saturday, March 22, 2003.
