This year's recipients of the 2002 GRACE Visual Arts Scholarships are Eric Morrell of Herndon High School and Brook Tobey of South Lakes High School. They each received a $1,000 scholarship honoring their excellence in the contemporary visual arts. In its fourth year, GRACE presented its Visual Arts Scholarship to encourage and foster growth in contemporary art. Both Eric and Brook plan to attend the Pratt Institute of Art in New York. Coastal Carolina University is pleased to announce area students who made their Dean's List: Meghan R. Daniels of Herndon, Jennifer L. Miner of Oak Hill, and Shannon R. Troup of Reston. To make the list, underclassmen must get a 3.25 GPA and upperclassmen must get a 3.5 GPA.

Sarah Rebecca Sedaghatfar of Reston has been selected to receive the James Farmer Scholarship for the 2002-03 academic year at Mary Washington College. The $670 scholarship is awarded to a student who exemplifies the ideals espoused and practiced by the late Dr. Farmer, who was a civil rights activist who founded the Congress on Racial Equality, led "Freedom Rides" into the South, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He taught at Mary Washington for 13 years before he passed away in 1999 Sedaghatfar is the daughter of Davood and Elizabeth Sedaghatfar of Reston, and is a 1999 graduate of South Lakes High School. A junior majoring in history, Sedaghatfar is the vice president of the Jewish Student Union.

South Lakes High School Class of 1982: 20-Year Reunion, October 5, 2002 at the Sheraton Premiere- Capital Club.

The following students from Reston achieved the Dean’s List at James Madison University: Nathan Charles, Victoria Cosham, Shannon Danish, Susan Green, Rachel Harper, Lauren Larkin, Sarah Lussier, Gwyneth McClure, Behvin McDonnell, Tim Orr, Hunter Post, Kara Simons and Stephanie Sweatt. The Dean’s List requires a grade-point average of 3.5 to 3.89 with a course load of at least 14 hours in the Spring Semester 2002.

Lena Thomson, Alexis Vogl and Christina Welch, all from Reston, achieved the President’s List at James Madison University. They achieved a grade-point average of 3.9 or above with a course load of at least 14 hours in the Spring Semester 2002.

Jessica Robertson of South Lakes High School has been named a winner of the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the largest scholarship program honoring creative achievement by students in grades 7-12.

Dogwood Elementary School and Langston Hughes Middle School will participate as part of the first phase of LEAD Fairfax during the 2002-03 school year.

Caroline Payne of Reston has received a Bachelor of Science degree from Coastal Carolina University.

Dogwood Elementary School Principal Ricki Harvey and Fairfax County School Board member Robert Frye were honored with community hero awards by the A&E Network. The awards were presented at a special ceremony on June 28. Harvey was honored for her leadership in the school and community during the rebuilding of Dogwood Elementary, which was destroyed by fire in November 2000. Frye was honored for his 17 years on the School Board and for his advocacy of nondiscrimination in the school system. Harvey and Frye were two of 10 individuals from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area selected for the honor by A&E.
