Bike Path Gets A Surface Facial

July 18, 2002

As part of a multi-year improvement project, the National Park Service is resurfacing the Mount Vernon Bike Path. Contractors for the Park Service are now working on the section between Mount Vernon and Fort Hunt.

"This is the third phase of the Bike Path renovation," said Dottie Marshall, deputy superintendent of the George Washington Parkway. "Congressman Jim Moran has been helpful in including about $250, 000 in our budget each year for the work, which includes root pruning and resurfacing."

In preparation for a new layer of asphalt, crews sprayed the existing bike path surface with tar, then applied a specialty fabric. Marshall said the material improves the foundation for the new surface and will extend its lifetime.
