High Summer in the Garden, an exhibit of floral paintings by Harriette Winingham, will be on display at the Loft Gallery, located at 313 Mill St. in Occoquan, through Aug. 4. Her paintings range from intimate floral studies done from life to the vivid colors of sun-loving gardens. Winningham's paintings are in collections in Northern Virginia, along the East Coast and as far away as Florence, Italy.

Portrait of a State, featuring the work of 13 artists from Jerusalem's Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, will be on display until Aug. 27, at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, located at 8900 Little River Turnpike in Fairfax. This is a mixed-media traveling exhibit that has been compiled for the Embassy of Israel.

The National Capital Art Glass Guild features the theme "Spirits Signs Symbols" at Artisans United Craft Gallery in a full time fine craft show and sale through Sept. 4. On Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., four dozen-plus juried artisans will show and sell handmade and decorated pieces including pottery, baskets, glass, porcelain, carved wood and more. The Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department will be offering Virginia residents 55 and older enrollment in the Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight hour class covers safe driving information for mature drivers. The course is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented

by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes are held the second Saturday of each month. The next MODIP class is being held at the Franconia District Station located at 6121 Franconia Road, on Saturday, August 10, 2002, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration is required and can be done by contacting the Auxiliary Police at (703) 924-3029. The fee for this course is $10 per person for books and materials.

"Summer Stories" at Gunston Hall Plantation will be held Wednesdays in August from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Stories range from popular 18th-century books to African-American slavery tales. The Fairfax Jubil-Aires, Fairfax County Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartets Singing in America, is forming a male chorus to perform throughout Northern Virginia in remembrance of September 11.
