GMU Gyro Aims for World Record

George Mason Community Appreciation Day was unveiled with a new flavor Wednesday morning — about 240 feet of it.

What is believed to be the world's longest wrap was showcased and then eaten in front of the Johnson Center on the George Mason University campus.

"It's the world's longest lavaush wrap," said Angela Arthur of Sodexho, the company that assembled the wrap.

The wrap featured chicken and beef gyro meat, accompanied by lettuce, tomatoes, green onions, and tzatziki, a sauce made from cucumbers and yogurt. All the ingredients were donated by Kronos Products, and then wrapped up by Sodexho employees, who provide the dining services at the university.

The construction of the wrap took about an hour, said Jeff Curran, executive chef at George Mason. He also said that information regarding the wrap would be sent to the Guinness Book of World Records.

"We're hoping to get it in the records."

According to Lisa McGary of George Mason, the only other entry in the world records is a submarine sandwich that measured nine feet, a full 231 feet shy of this gyro.

Hundreds of people were present outside the Johnson Center enjoying the food and festivities.

"It tastes really good," said David Mercer, 24, a graduate student at George Mason.

The wrap was a gift to the faculty and staff of the university from the dining services employees.

"It's our way of paying back the faculty for their patronage throughout the year and in the summer," said McGary. "We know they have that option of eating off campus."
