Glebe Elementary students won achievement awards from Classica Theater's Literacy Through Arts (LITarts) program on June 4. First-grader Brenda Palmer and second-grader Andres Jauregui each received Most Outstanding Actor awards. First-grader Brayan Buendia and second-grader Olga Sangl received awards for Most Improved. The four prize winners and 23 other Glebe first- and second-graders attended weekly LITarts workshops at the theater

from February-June of this year. The workshops used poetry, rhymes, puppetry and other theatrical tools to improve the students' speaking, writing and listening skills, as well as their posture.

Hoffman-Boston Elementary School students Alba Hernandez, Anna Lopez, Theo Moon and Damion Stovall have been chosen to receive scholarships for a special seven-week drama workshop sponsored by Classika Theatre. They were chosen based on their demonstrated enthusiasm and school improvement during the Classika Theatre partnership with Hoffman-Boston. As part of Hoffman-Boston's "Project Edison," Classika practitioners work with fourth-graders each week to improve Virginia-history knowledge through the use of drama.

Joanna Olivetti, a senior at H-B Woodlawn High School, has received the McDonald's 2002 Ray A. Kroc Student/Teacher Achievement Award. Olivetti was among 15 area high-school seniors honored for "their all-year excellence in citizenship, leadership, scholarship and community service" at ceremonies held May 16 at the Westfields Marriott in Chantilly. Each student honoree received a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of his choice, a Ray A. Kroc medallion, and one share of McDonald's stock.

John Richard Barbour, Matthew Jason Hawkins, Krit Kitisin, Maria Pacheco Rumsey, Susan Rosannah Stein, Linda Marie Szymanski, Arthur Lawson Webb and Brian Christopher Zanoni have graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Courtney Marie Peterson received the Kidwell Medal, along with the Treado Medal from the Physics Department at Georgetown University. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree, Phi Beta Kappa. Peterson attended Yorktown High School.

Yassaman Askari graduated magna cum laude with a degree of bachelor of science in foreign service, Phi Beta Kappa honors, from Georgetown University.

Jonathan Zuckerman received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Syracuse University in New York at commencement ceremonies on May 12.

Kevin Setter, a senior at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the 2002-03 year. Setter, a physics and math double major, will study quantum gravity physics at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada.

Graduates of the University of Vermont include Deirdre A. Joy, who received a doctorate in biology; Oliver M. Rutherfurd, a bachelor of arts degree in English; and Elaine M. Vidal, who earned a bachelor of science degree in environmental studies.

Holly Fisher was named to the dean's list for the Spring of 2002 at Geneva College. Dean's list status is awarded to students who earn a 3.6 grade point average or better.

John Emmett Cavanaugh received a degree in business administration from King's College.

Longwood College has announced students who have received honors for superior academic achievement during the spring 2002 semester. Students named to the dean's list achieved an academic average of 3.5 to 3.99. Students named to the president's list earned a perfect academic average of 4.0: Catherine Elizabeth Gayer, president's list; Aaron John Hodukavich, dean's list; Ashley Elizabeth Holmes, dean's list; Kristina Marie Loerch, dean's list; and Sara Rebecca Voegler, president's list.
