Mission Accomplished

Churchill girls emotions fly after winning the state title.

Robyn Bernstein was the first to receive her trophy and, then, Shelby Kamenstein's smile said it all.

"I can't believe it. We did it. We're state champions, we're so psyched. We've been waiting for it forever," said Kamenstein.

Churchill (24-3) defeated Oxon Hill 68-49 to win the 4A girls championship on Saturday, March 9.

"You work four years for this. To be your last game and final game and be a state champion — and bring the banner to our gym saying 2002 state champion — is pretty cool," said Julie Paul.

"I couldn't ask for anything else. It's a perfect ending for my high school career," said Louisa Feve.

Churchill has made it to the Maryland state title the last two years. Last year, the Bulldogs lost by four points in their first final appearance. This year, the team won the school's first ever girls state basketball championship.

"We did not want to have the same feeling we had last year. We already had a second place trophy so we didn't need another one. You don't get second chances that often," said Feve.

"This is what you dream of, the last game of my senior year we go out with a win, that's just awesome," said Stephanie Holland.

So how does a state champion celebrate the evening after all 15 players participated in the title victory?

After finding out T.G.I. Friday's had a 3 1/2 hour wait after Saturday's game, the players walked a few stores down.

"We all went to Bagel City and we were loud," said Patricia Calomeris, a senior. "I'm so glad they put up with us."

"People will say to me, 'Hey Ms. State Champion,' and I will say, 'Yup. That's me.' It's the best feeling. We worked so hard," said Calomeris.

"I'll be sitting down and it will hit me again that we're the state champion. It's an amazing feeling," said Chelsea Phillips.

"I'm loving every part of it. I'm always proud to walk around and be a part of this team," said Erica Friedman.
