The Herndon Parks and Recreation Department has begun registration for its summer camps. The camps that are being offered are Preschool Play Camp for ages 3-5, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon or 1-3:30 p.m.; Summer Fun for ages 6-11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended care available; and Teen Discovery for ages 12-15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All camps take place at the Herndon Community Center and meet Monday-Friday. Amputee Support Group Of Northern Virginia is a support group for amputees, their families and friends. The Herndon Fortnightly Club is accepting applications for a one-year scholarship to individuals living in the greater Herndon area. Candidates should be accepted for entrance or enrolled in an educational institution. Candidates should write a one-page letter, without attachments, to The Herndon Fortnightly Club, explaining why the scholarship is needed, what career goals are being pursued, what academic institution has or will provide acceptance and comments relating to activities, community service and academic standing. Families can help with the peace reconciliation effort in Northern Ireland by hosting a pair of teens (choose boys or girls, one Roman Catholic and one Protestant, ages 15-18) in their home for four weeks this summer beginning July 2. The teenage boys and girls are part of the Children's Friendship Project for Northern Ireland (CFPNI). To be eligible, host families need to provide a safe, neutral setting for the teens to get to know one another, a single bedroom for them to share, and day-long adult supervision. Co-hosting with another family for two weeks of the four-week stay is an option.

Herndon-Reston FISH (Friendly, Instant, Sympathetic Help) Is looking for someone to manage its thrift store, the Bargain Loft. This is a volunteer position, which offers an opportunity to serve area neighbors by generating revenue to support FISH community service.
The manager will lead a group of volunteers in all merchandising and operational aspects of running a small retail store. No specific background is required, although previous retail experience
is helpful. Hours are flexible. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday
10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Weekly preparations take place on Monday morning. The manager is supported by "Day Managers" and usually works 20 or more hours per week, depending on the season. For the fourth year, the Virginia Legends Walk is asking the general public to nominate great Virginians past and present. So far, 26 Virginia Legends have been chosen, including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Robert E. Lee, Pearl Bailey, Arthur Ashe, Patsy Cline and Alan B. Shepard.
A statewide panel of 570 judges made up of university presidents, heads of museums and historical societies, librarians and members of the media choose from potential Legend candidates. Qualified candidates must have been born in Virginia or lived in the Commonwealth when they made their most notable achievements. Those achievements must be of worldwide or national significance.
Last year's candidates included William H. Harrison, Tom Wolfe, Secretariat, William Styron, Ruth Brown, Steve Case, Douglas Wilder, Katie Couric, Robert Duval and Bruce Hornsby.
A candidate who is picked to be a Virginia Legend will have his or her name added to a permanent exhibit in Virginia Beach.

The Herndon Rotary Club is accepting applications for its annual scholarship programs: one $6,000 four-year college scholarship ($1,500 per year), and one $2,000 two-year college or vocational scholarship ($1,000 per year).
