<sh>Tax Rate Reduced

<bt>The Board of Supervisors adopted an amendment to the FY 2003 tax rate resolution that will lower the tax rate for Small District 5 from 6 cents to 5.2 cents. The amendment, proposed by Supervisor Catherine Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) was approved unanimously.

The tax rate resolution will lower the property tax rate across the county from 1.23 percent to 1.21 percent. The amended resolution was approved 9-1 with Hudgins voting nay.

The Reston Community Center Board of Governors recommended to the Board of Supervisors that the tax rate in Small District 5 be reduced. Small District 5 was established in 1975 by the Board of Supervisors and funds the operation and programming of the Reston Community Center.

The RCC Board, in special session on April 23, recommended the tax revenue reduction after review of the 2002 increase in Fairfax County real estate assessments.

<sh>Town Meeting on Student Survey

<bt>In 2001, more than 11,000 Fairfax County public school students took the "Communities That Care Youth Risk Survey," which surveyed their behavior and attitudes toward drugs, drinking, smoking, violence and depression.

The Reston Community Coalition is sponsoring a Town Meeting at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods to present the survey results, give an opportunity for public discussion and to highlight what local educators, governments and non-profits are doing to address the problems of youths.

The Town Meeting, to take place on Tuesday, May 21, from 7-9 p.m., will feature a catered reception, speakers, and a question and answer session. Speakers will include Catherine Hudgins, Hunter Mill District Supervisor; Dr. Daniel Domenech, superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools; Stu Gibson, chair, Fairfax County School Board, and P.D. O'Keefe, specialist, Safe & Drug-Free Youth Section, Fairfax County Public Schools.

Free child-care will be available at the meeting. The Reston Community Center is located in the lower level of the Hunters Woods Shopping Center at 2310 Colts Neck Road. For directions or more information, call 703-476-4500 (TTY).
