State Senator Linda T. "Toddy" Puller (D-36) urged Lynchburg College graduates to "Believe in yourself; care about others, be involved - make a difference, and to confront challenges."
As the graduating class of 2002 walked across the stage under brilliant, sunny skies to receive their degrees, the commencement speaker told them, "I hope you feel on top of the world today; savor the accomplishment of your efforts. Although I wish none of you would have to face adversities; the fact is you will. It's how you respond to those tests that determines who you are."
Puller said, "Despite the best-laid plans, defining moments and challenges face us all."
Citing the events of Sept. 11 that changed our lives forever, Puller pointed out that: "Americans rose to the occasion helping one another. We learned again that we are at our best when our freedom is threatened."
SEN. PULLER challenged the graduates to be actively involved, vote, and make their voices heard. "Democracy is not a spectator sport. This is what America is all about and a message I deliver as often as I can."
She reminded the graduates to "keep these principles in mind -- believe in yourself; care for others, be involved, make a difference, and confront challenges, don't run from them."
