Yorktown High

May is finally over. For seniors, June means a month of enjoying school, prom (June 7) and graduation (June 17). For certain seniors, the end of May signals the beginning of the Senior Experience Program, a three-week long internship exempting them from all work related to class. Yet for those underclassmen, June only means they are one more year through high school.

However, June does not mean the end of Yorktown success. Junior Scott Newman has recently been nationally featured for his science project on heat-sensing lie detectors. The testing device he used showed that when a person lied, his head would increase in heat. NBC personality Al Roker presented this experiment on air. Newman’s project was featured on “The Today Show” on NBC after winning first place at the Regional Science Fair and competing in the International Science Fair. Newman's project won him not only this recognition but scholarships and other types of awards.

The English department is also compiling a Genre celebration to be held June 4 in the school courtyard. Everyone is welcome to share poetry, short stories and more. For more information on times, genres and possible entries, contact Ms. Evans at 703-228-5368.

Yet as the year comes to a close, seniors have the most to look forward to. Senior Experience students left school on May 24 and will only return June 14 to present their past weeks' work. Similarly, prom has become the topic of discussion in most seniors' lives. Almost all limousine companies are now completely booked, and restaurants are filling fast for the night of June 7. The plans for perfection are quickly falling into place.

As the year comes to a close, look for Yorktown in the headlines. Boys soccer, as well as baseball and several other sports, is still competing in the regional tournaments.

Though the year is almost over, nothing is keeping students from continuing their success.
