Lyceum Concert

The 21st Century Ensemble orchestra, Forrest Tobey, conductor, presents Igor Stravinsky's seldom-performed masterpiece, The Soldier's Tale, with Michael Daugherty's Dead Elvis and the world premiere of Steven Campbell Hilmy's Kiss of Stone for chamber ensemble and conducted electronics on Friday, May 31, 8 p.m. at the Lyceum, 201 S. Seaport Summer Sounds

The musical sounds of summer will fill the night air as Old Town hosts Seaport Summer Sounds, a free, weekly outdoor concert series every Friday night from May 31 to Aug. 31. The concert series is sponsored by the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association and the City of Alexandria.

The concerts will alternate Friday nights at two locations: King Street Station, 1800 Diagonal Road, and the Alexandria Marina, at King and Union streets.

Teddy Bear Tea

The Alexandria Black History Resource Center will host its sixth annual Teddy Bear Tea for children, Saturday, June 1, from 1-3 p.m. The cost for the tea is $7,50 per guest or $15 for one parent and child. Registration is limited to 60 persons and reservations are required. Raina Terrell, a local dancer, will entertain guests with an interactive dance performance. To reserve space call 703-838-4356.

"Visitation" Tickets Available

Tickets for "Visitation," the original musical drama by the House of Wellington, scheduled for June 1, at 7 p.m., at TC Williams High School, may be purchased at the high school or at various bookstores in the city. For more information on ticket outlets call Frances Terrell at 703-360-1090.

Kones 4 Kids to Benefit Foster Children

The Advisory Council for The Fund for Alexandria's Child invites the public to attend Kones 4 Kids from noon-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2 at Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, 103 South Union St. The afternoon will feature free balloons, door prizes, face painting and washable tattoos. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Fund. COMCAST Communications is a major sponsor, along with Ben and Jerry's. The Fund helps children in foster care, or those at risk of being placed in foster care due to neglect or abuse.

Book Signing

Dr. Wendy Coakley-Thompson, local author of "Back to Life," will be conducting a reading and signing at Barnes & Nobel Booksellers, 3651 Jefferson Davis Hwy., on Wednesday, June 5, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Call 703-930-8960.

Dinner and the Races

Community Lodgings, an Alexandria-based nonprofit helping low-income families to improve their lives, is sponsoring an "Evening at the Races" on Friday, June 7 at Rosecroft Raceway with dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. and post time at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person. Call 703-549-4407.

Jaycees to Hold Yard Sale

The Alexandria Junior Chamber of Commerce will hold a Community Yard Sale fund-raiser on Saturday, June 8, at West Potomac High School. Vendor set-up is from 6:30-7 a.m., with the yard sale event running from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other yard sale dates are available on a 24-hour information line at 703-766-7171.

The Jaycees will provide complimentary spaces at the yard sales for seveal local community groups to raise money of their own. Contact the Jaycees for vendor rules.

Free Bee Talk

Master gardener and beekeeper Kathy Heslep will present a program on bees and the important role they play in the garden The free event will be held on Saturday, June 8 from 9-10 a.m. at the garden at Simpson Park in Alexandria. To register, call the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office at 703-228-6414. In case of rain, the program will be canceled.

MVO Concert

The Mount Vernon Orchestra will hold its final performances of the season on Sunday, June 2, at Bishop Ireton High School and Thursday, June 9, at Carl Sandburg Middle School. Both performances will be at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for senior citizens and college students. Children under 18 are free. Call 703-799-8229.

Fort Ward Civil War Camp Day

Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site will present its annual Civil War Camp Day living history program on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event features infantry drills, tours of Union and Confederate camps, and conversations with soldiers and civilian re-enactors. Suggested donation: $2 adults, $1 children.
