Kelly Conniff, 16, of Narcissus Court in Springfield attended the Governor's German Academy last summer at James Madison University. Only 45 high-school students from around the state were selected to participate in the three-week academy. Kelly is a junior at West Springfield High School.

Joanne M. McSorley of Springfield was recently appointed to the Vocational Rehabilitation Council for the Blind by Gov. Mark R. Warner (D).

Susan Ballard of Fairfax, the director of Children's World Learning Center, was recently appointed to the Child Day-Care Council by Gov. Mark R. Warner (D).

<lst>Barbara Lash of Burke recently opened up her home to a visitor from the Netherlands through a professional development exchange program that pairs educators in Virginia with their counterparts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Lash is an art history adjunct at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). Lash's visitor was Lidwien Mulders, a teacher at ROC Oost-Nederland in Hengelo. Mulders teaches basic education for native Dutch speakers, develops adult education courses and manages other teachers and counselors.

Last May, Lash stayed with Mulders at her home in Oldenzaal and visited several museums that house Dutch paintings that rarely leave the country.

Mulders sat in on several classes at NVCC to compare teaching techniques, and she accompanied Lash to a class at George Mason University, where Lash is studying for her doctoral degree.

Fairfax resident Kelsey Keel, who won an Emmy award in May for her performance in Showtime Network's "My Louisiana Sky," was honored with the Young Actor's Award of Excellence. Kelsey received the award Oct. 12 at the 11th Annual Young Actor's Luncheon and Awards at the Sportmen's Lodge in Los Angeles. Kelsey also won the Young Artists Award's Outstanding Young Actress in a Television Movie in April. Kelsey posed for pictures with fellow award-winner Tyler Hoechlin, who appeared with Tom Hanks in "Road to Perdition."

Leslie Campbell and Janice Laccone are appearing in Roanoke College's production of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." Campbell is a freshman from Springfield, and Laccone is a senior psychology major from Burke. Performances of "Twelfth Night" take place Nov. 8, 9, 15 and 16, at 8 p.m., at the Olin Theater in Salem, Va. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for senior citizens and students.
